Sweet
Music To The Ears
Sweet
music to the ears of many people this year is the news
that the Christie organ at the Brighton Dome is being restored
as part of the £21 million restoration work being
carried out. The first concert on the working organ
will be in September 2003.
The
Dome was originally built as part of the Royal Pavilion
estate, and King George IV used it to stable his horses. Brighton
Corporation purchased the Pavilion Estate from Queen Victoria
in 1850, and turned the stables into a Concert Hall
in 1867. During the First World War it was used as
a hospital for Indian soldiers. The interior
was remodeled in 1935 into a modern concert hall with permanently
fixed seats.
The
famous Hill, Norman & Beard "Christie" organ
was installed early in 1936. The opening recital
was given by Quentin MacLean on 15th May 1936. I
am sure that we all look forward to hearing the sounds
of this magnificent organ again, after its re-installation
and tuning in August 2002, some sixty six years after it
was first commissioned. |
